THE FLASHER

The context of this project

"The Flasher" is a project develop within the context of a course about Entertainment Systems at Lusófona University.

In this course we were challenged to develop an alternative controller having as a base an object bought at "Feira da Ladra" - a portuguese local flea market.

After designing a game we sought to repurpose this old  Centon Flash FG105D into an independent all-in-one game controller and interface.

The Ghost Hunt Begins!!

How to kill a ghost

In this game the player has 4 main tools to fight back against the ghosts that will eb coming from all directions:

The flash - As long as you are in the corresponding frequency, it will kill any ghost it can.

The frequency changer (switch on the side) - Twist it to change between 4 different channels, identified by the following corresponding colors :

  • Frequency 1 - Green
  • Frequency 2 - Yellow
  • Frequency 3 - Blue
  • Frequency 4 - Pink

The Radar - It will show the direction of the closest ghost to you (exclusive to the ghosts associated with the current frequency).

Audio - This is maybe one of the biggest helpers the player has. With each type of ghost having its own  audio cues (or lack there of), it is many times the first peace of information to gather before fighting the biggest threat while in the field.

The Ghosts

As it is possible to imagine, there's more than one kind of ghost and each one has its attributes and associated frequency, with the different types and their behaviours listed as below:

The Standard - will just try to get to you and kill you if it touches you. Detetctable by the radar and perfectly audible. Not too slow nor too quick.

The Stalker - will try to creep up on the palyer, not showing up on the radar even if the player is in the frequency channel 2. Will occasionally do some rather quiet clicking noises. Will take it's time to reach the player, but it's easily forgettable with all the distraction happening.

The Rusher - like the name implies, it will try and rush to the player. With loud and quick steps it's an immediate yet perfectly detectable and audible threat that should quickly be taken care of.

The Voyeur - it will sit on its spawn point and stare at the player for 15 seconds, killing them if not flashed properly. While not moving a muscle nor making a sound can make it look easy to deal with, even if detectable by the radar, these can be quite the tricky kind to keep in check.
